Have you heard about collagen?
Following on from our article about eye health let’s talk about Skin, Joint and Bone Health!
Collagen is an important structural protein which makes up almost 30% of our total body protein (and 20% of our total bone mass, 95% of bone matrix & 80% of skin). Because of its special structure it acts like a ‘rope’ adding stability to our bodies with the strength of steel. Collagen occurs in blood vessels, skin, fascia, eye, dentin, blood brain barrier, intestinal wall, hair, cornea, fingernails, intervertebral discs, joints, tendons and more.
Collagen peptides are made from collagen and have a special ability to dissolve in water, be absorbed readily, are non- allergenic and have a neutral taste. These collagen peptides are the building blocks of connective tissue.
Ok so what do Collagen Peptides actually do?
- Bones – It can help with our bone mineral density (BMD) especially important for those with osteoporosis or osteopenia. Studies have shown BMD improves quite markedly especially in the neck and spine after collagen supplementation. It can also reduce fracture rates, accelerate fracture healing, reduce bone loss and improve bone density in the long term.
- Joints – It may help the collagen structure in the joints which can help with osteoarthritis symptoms (pain/stiffness) improve joint function, reduce post exercise joint pain in younger athletes and help with ankle stability. As most athletic injuries occur in tendons (the weak point in the chain of movement/strain) and a tendon is composed of 60-80% collagen – supplementation may help to support the integrity, elasticity and strength of tendons. Over 20 studies involving over 3000 people have proven the health benefits of collagen in joints, cartilage, ligaments and bones.
- Skin – Reduces appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and cellulite. It does this by increasing the thickness and elasticity of our skin. It may also improve the so called ‘crepe’ like appearance of skin and has been shown to reduce the inflammatory processes in the skin and epithelial tissue. It has been shown to heal bed sores in the elderly, heal stomach ulcers and modulate the inflammation of intestinal colitis. It is thought to rejuvenate the skin from within.
- Weight Loss – Studies have shown collagen supplementation may help to improve muscle strength and increase fat free mass (FFM) when combined with resistance exercise. This may be occurring due to an increase in metabolic rate. Collagen has been shown to support muscle mass whilst keeping a stable body weight, support changes in body composition and may help counteract age related muscle loss.

There are a few different types of collagen on the market in Australia and I am pleased to announce we have the Whole Body Collagen from Designs for Health in stock here in clinic. This contains Verisol* which stimulates skin metabolism and counteracts the loss of collagen from the inside. Fortigel* supports the regeneration of joint cartilage and Fortibone * improves bone mass density, helps with bone stability and flexibility and has bone building effects.
The powder is tasteless and is easily included into you or your children’s daily routine. I find this type of collagen of great benefit to children especially if your child has eczema, food intolerances, is not eating enough protein, is growing slowly or their hair may grow slowly, their fingernails break easily or they have acne. It can benefit children or adults with dry skin, joint or tendon injuries or broken bones. Older adults may find it helps with their bone density, joint health, osteoarthritis symptoms, fine wrinkles or maintaining lean muscle mass.
The beauty of collagen is it can be used instead of protein powder in a smoothie, baked goods, porridge, even stirred into coffee or tea etc… as it has no flavour it is easy to hide! This comes in handy with children especially!
